Future Food Living Lab at HTW Berlin

Reallabor
Vision

The Future Food Living Lab is being established on the Wilhelminenhof campus of the Berlin University of Applied Sciences (HTW) as an open space for dialogue between academia, students and society. The central question is: What will the food of the future look like, and how can we shape it together?

The real-world laboratory brings new cultivation systems and the food4future organisms (algae, halophytes, jellyfish and crickets) to life. Students, researchers and visitors develop and test interactive installations, exhibits and event formats that present research in a way that is accessible, engaging and relevant to everyday life.

Strong networks play a key role in this: as part of the nationwide Real-World Labs Innovation Portal, we pool knowledge, exchange ideas with other real-world labs and benefit from expert input from the worlds of research, business and civil society. Furthermore, we play an active role within the network and lead the Agriculture and Food expert group. This close network accelerates innovation processes and makes it possible to translate new ideas into real-world applications more quickly.

The laboratory serves as a place of learning, a space for experimentation and a showcase: it is here that ideas, visions and prototypes for the sustainable food systems of the future are developed – right in the heart of Oberschöneweide.

Four degree programmes at HTW Berlin are currently involved in the real-world laboratory:

  • International Media Informatics:
As part of the project, students on this course will develop an augmented reality application in which 3D models of the cultivation systems will be visualised interactively and enhanced with additional information.
    Contact person: Marino Gabel
  • Industrial Design:
The students are working on design concepts and prototypes, including exhibition pieces as well as technical and design solutions relating to cultivation systems and their applications.
    Contact person: Prof. Franziska Schuh
  • Computer Science in Culture, Health & Communication Design:
As part of the Immersive Learning Spaces project, students are developing compact design concepts and VR prototypes that bring complex content to life in a spatial context.

Current Projekte

Test ideas. Experience the future.

The real-world laboratory is a place of learning, a space for experimentation and a showcase: here, ideas are translated into formats, tested and brought to life – from initial visions to prototypes for the sustainable food systems of the future. Anyone wishing to gain experience today can do so at the Immersive Technologies Hub (ITH) at HTW Berlin: every Wednesday, we open immersive learning spaces in Building H / Room H006 (Wilhelminenhofstraße 75A) as a low-threshold introduction to new educational and experiential formats.
